Age 71, late of Hegewisch, passed away on Tuesday, October 12, 2021 in Lafayette, IN. She was born on January 8, 1950 in Douglasville, Georgia to the late Riley Brown and Lois "Betty" Juanita (Clayton) Haden. Ellen graduated from George Washington High School in Chicago, Illinois in 1968. In 1967, she married Lawrence "Larry" Lee Szumanski. He preceded her in death in 1996. She worked for Trans Act and other companies throughout the years as an office manager and accountant. She was the book keeper and weekend cook at the AA Club. She loved going to the boats and was a great Gin and Poker player like her father. Her family and friends affectionately refer to her as "The Shark". She ran several bowling leagues including organizing trips to Los Vegas, lake front boat cruises, and Make a Wish Charity Foundation events. She was also a bit of a Disco Queen in the 70's.
Surviving are her daughter, Jeana (Monnie) Whitely of Chicago, IL; her siblings, Gary (Annmarie) Haden of Elk Grove Village, IL and Tina (Tom) Mintefering of Chicago, IL; her grandson, Eric Whitely of Chicago, IL; and several nieces and nephews.
