George Glastres, beloved husband, father, and cherished community leader, passed away peacefully in his home in Hegewisch on Saturday, January 25, 2025, at the age of 94. Born on September 25, 1930, in Ano Diminio, Korinthias, Greece, George was a man of deep convictions and unwavering dedication to his family and community.
George is survived by his loving wife, Paraskevi "Voula" Glastres (Karahalious) and his devoted daughter, Sotiria (Chris) Glastres Huggins. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews who will carry forward his legacy of kindness and generosity. He is predeceased by his parents, Yiannis and Anastasia Glastres; and siblings, Georgia Glastres, Sotirios (late Vlasia) Glastres and Hristos (late Ioanna) Glastres.
George's journey began in his native country Greece, where he developed a strong sense of cultural pride and commitment to his heritage. He enjoyed sharing his stories with his family and friends about his time serving in the Hellenic Navy. His life was marked by significant accomplishments, most notably serving as the president of the Greek Orthodox Church. In this role, he touched the lives of many, fostering a spirit of unity and faith within the community. Additionally, George dedicated many years to organizing the Greek Orthodox Church Fest, an event that not only celebrated the rich traditions of Greek culture but also brought people together in a joyous and inclusive atmosphere.
As we reflect on the life of George Glastres, we celebrate a man who was not only a pillar of his community but also a devoted family man. His contributions and spirit will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
